Tainan Little Travelers — Summer 2026

August 10-14, 2026 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM 26 Meili Street, Tainan Teacher Nan + Assistant PoPo

Most children have walked past the same streets, markets, and old buildings in this city hundreds of times. They know the way home. What they have not done yet is stop and really look — with a sketchbook open, a question in mind, and time to notice what is actually there.

That is what this week is for.

台南小旅人 is a city exploration camp built around one belief: art is not just a subject you learn to draw or paint. It is about noticing what is around us. Each day, we will take children somewhere in Tainan — a world-class museum, a woodworking studio, a traditional market, a historic building, a trampoline park. The mornings belong to the city. The afternoons belong to making what they found permanent. At the end of the week, every child will bring home a handmade map-diary — five illustrated pages of the places they visited, made with their own hands in their own words. Not a souvenir. A record of a week spent really looking at the city they live in.

Day 1 July 6
Chimei Museum — The Ancient Traveler
Pen and watercolor — three object studies from the exhibition
Morning
At the Egypt exhibition, children sketch three objects that catch their eye — quick on-site drawings done with the real thing in front of them.
Afternoon
Back at the studio, they complete all three in pen and watercolor, building on the morning sketches with line and wash. The three finished studies become Page 1 of their map-diary.
Day 2 July 7
Cultural Creative Park — The Maker
Woodworking + observational sketching + styrofoam print
Morning
Children saw, sand, and shape a small wood object at the woodworking studio — and while they work, they sketch: the tools, the hands, the workshop around them. Quick observational drawings done alongside the making.
Afternoon
Back at the studio, those sketches get transferred onto styrofoam boards, inked, and printed. The best print becomes Page 2 of the map-diary. The wood object goes home too.
Day 3 July 8
Bao'an Market — The Food Detective
Market sketching + air-dry clay sculpture
Morning
Each child carries a find-and-sketch list into the market: 3–4 drawings to complete on-site — a person (a vendor, a shopper), a corner of the market, an object or ingredient up close, and one free choice. Drawings are done right there, at the stall or spot. Followed by a picnic in the park.
Afternoon
Back at the studio, they choose one market find to sculpt in air-dry clay. The market sketches and clay piece become Page 3 of the map-diary.
Day 4 July 9
Historic Building — The Historian
Ink wash painting (water ink on rice paper)
Morning
Children visit a historic building in Tainan — learning its structure, touching its walls, hearing its history. Outside, they sketch one detail nobody else would notice.
Afternoon
Back at the studio, they complete the sketch as a finished ink wash painting on rice paper. The painting becomes Page 4 of the map-diary.
Day 5 July 10
AirGene Trampoline Park — The Body in the City
Gesture drawings + chalk pastel on black paper + bind the map-diary
Morning
The last morning is about movement — children sketch each other mid-jump in 30-second gesture drawings, learning that a line can be fast, that a shape can feel surprised.
Afternoon
Working from the gesture sketches, they create an expressive piece using color chalk pastels on black paper — the dark ground makes color pop and line feel electric. Then the map-diary is bound: covers attached, city map endpaper inserted, five days of pages inside. It goes home complete.
Please bring
  • Water bottle (full)
  • Outdoor backpack
  • Lunch utensils
  • Comfortable clothes & walking shoes
  • One change of clothes
Optional
  • Sunhat or cap
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunglasses
  • Light rain jacket or small umbrella
  • Small towel
Please arrive by 9:00 AM and pickup your child by 4:00 PM. Early-bird registrants may check in at 8:00 AM and receive a free breakfast.
Our days involve public buses, outdoor spaces, and city walking. Please dress your child for movement and pack layers — Tainan in July can be hot, and some indoor locations are air-conditioned.
If the weather is poor or a typhoon warning is issued, we will contact you individually about whether the day proceeds as planned.
Please share anything that helps your child feel at ease — nap habits, sensory sensitivities, social needs, anything about food if a market picnic is involved. The more we know, the better we can support them.
Photos will be taken throughout the week and shared with families after camp ends. We will always respect your child's preference if they would rather not be photographed.
This is a group experience built on mutual care. We ask that children come ready to take turns, stay curious, and look after each other. If anything comes up during the week, we will reach out to you directly.

Please send your child ready to look at things slowly, ask questions in new places, get a little paint on their hands, and come home on Friday carrying something they made completely from scratch. We think the map-diary will live on their bookshelf for a long time — and that every time they open it, they will remember exactly what each day felt like to be inside.
